Thopter

The Thopter token included in the 2017 Duel Decks: Elves vs. Inventors set reflects the long-standing Magic: The Gathering tradition of using tokens to represent temporary permanents created by spells and abilities. These specific tokens were designed to support the 'Inventors' side of the dual deck, which focused on the artifact-heavy gameplay associated with the plane of Kaladesh. By providing a standardized visual representation of a 1/1 flying creature, the token allows players to manage the board state clearly while participating in the thematic conflict between the organic nature of Elves and the mechanical ingenuity of Artificers.

The visual design of this token leans into the aesthetic of the Kaladesh block, characterized by its bright, copper-toned aesthetic and intricate filigree patterns. It was created to align with the overall art direction of the set, which emphasized a blend of clockwork machinery and sleek, elegant craftsmanship. While tokens are often mass-produced and utilitarian, this iteration was received by collectors as a functional staple, valued for its cohesive art style that complements the mechanical themes of the Inventors deck.
