Where it came from
Throat Slitter was originally introduced as a Rare card in the Betrayers of Kamigawa set in 2005. It was designed to showcase the Ninjutsu mechanic, a signature ability of the set that allowed players to swap an unblocked attacker with a ninja from their hand, rewarding surprise maneuvers and tactical positioning during combat.
The art for this card, illustrated by Christopher Moeller, depicts a ruthless rogue in a dark, atmospheric style consistent with the Kamigawa plane's feudal Japanese fantasy aesthetic. When reprinted in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, it retained its original mechanics, serving as a staple for tribal Ninja decks that rely on stealth and efficiency.
