Where it came from
Throat Wolf is a card from the 2021 Mystery Booster Playtest series, a unique collection of cards designed by Wizards of the Coast R&D staff as a whimsical look into the development process. These cards were never intended for standard competitive play and were included in the Mystery Booster packs as a surprise, featuring a distinctive, rough-hewn aesthetic that mimics internal playtest materials rather than finalized product designs.
The card was conceived as part of the 'Future Sight' style experiment where designers explored mechanical space that felt experimental or avant-garde. The illustration and design were crafted by the internal team to evoke a sense of 'what could have been,' focusing on abstract mechanical concepts that push the boundaries of traditional card game rules. It is regarded by collectors as a piece of meta-commentary on the game's evolution, celebrating the experimental phases of card creation.
