Where it came from
Throat Wolf was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster playtest set, a collection of cards designed to evoke the experimental and often humorous nature of internal Wizards of the Coast design files. These playtest cards were distributed within select Mystery Booster packs, intended to showcase designs that explored unconventional mechanics without undergoing the standard rigorous balance and refinement process of a traditional expansion.
The card features an illustration by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent Magic: The Gathering artist known for her evocative character work. The design utilizes a 'playtest' aesthetic, characterized by a minimalist card frame and a prominent sticker-style identifier, reflecting the internal development environment of a design team testing new rules interactions, such as its unique ability to interact with the player's own vocal participation during a match.
