Where it came from
Thwart was originally released as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1999. It was later included in the 2001 World Championship Decks as part of the 'Recursive Explosive' deck piloted by Jan Tomcáni. These decks were produced as exact replicas of the cards used by the top players at the World Championship, allowing fans to experience the high-level competitive strategies of the era.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often captures the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic common in the late 1990s. As a counterspell that requires players to return lands to their hand as an additional cost, the design reflects the resource-management mechanics prevalent in the Mercadian Masques set, which focused heavily on returning permanents to play or hand to gain tactical advantages.
