Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, allowing players to own exact replicas of the sixty-card decks used by the top eight finalists at the 2001 Magic: The Gathering World Championships. This specific Island, identified by the collector number ar335a, is a reproduction of the basic land card used in the deck piloted by Tomi Walamies. These decks were designed for educational and casual play rather than tournament use, featuring gold-bordered cards with non-standard backs to distinguish them from regulation cards.
The card art features the iconic imagery of the standard set released during the Invasion block, reflecting the thematic focus on multi-color mechanics and the overarching narrative of the Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria. By choosing this art for the 2001 commemorative set, Wizards of the Coast maintained the aesthetic consistency of the era’s competitive scene. While these cards are not tournament-legal, they are highly regarded by collectors for their historical snapshot of professional deck-building strategy at the turn of the millennium.
