Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for the general public to own replicas of the exact 75-card decks used by the top players at the 2001 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. Unlike standard booster pack cards, these featured gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures of the professional players on the front, making them tournament-illegal but highly desirable for historical study and casual play.
The Island card from this set features the classic artwork by Rob Alexander, originally commissioned for the Invasion expansion. Alexander’s design aesthetic focused on creating expansive, painterly landscapes that defined the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering during the late 1990s and early 2000s. While these specific versions were mass-produced to replicate tournament decks, the inclusion of Alexander's art helped maintain a sense of continuity and prestige for players collecting the commemorative set.
