Where it came from
Timetwister was released in 1993 as part of the Alpha and Beta sets, the foundational launch of Magic: The Gathering. As one of the Power Nine, a group of cards widely considered the most powerful and influential in the game's history, it represents the early experimental phase of design led by Richard Garfield. The card was intended to provide an intense, game-resetting effect, reflecting the high-variance, chaotic spirit of early deck building during the hobby's infancy.
The card features iconic illustration by Amy Weber, who contributed a dreamlike, ethereal quality to many early Magic cards. Her design for Timetwister depicts a surreal vortex of celestial bodies and shifting forms, perfectly capturing the concept of temporal manipulation. Upon its release in the Unlimited Edition, the card became a staple of high-level competitive play, cementing its status as a cornerstone of vintage deck construction and a lasting artifact of 1990s collectible gaming culture.
