Where it came from
The International Collectors' Edition Timetwister was released in 1993 as part of a non-tournament-legal boxed set intended to provide players with access to the rarest cards from the initial Magic: The Gathering Alpha and Beta printings. These cards were marketed as a premium collection for hobbyists, distinguished from standard game pieces by their gold-bordered backs and square corners, which clearly marked them as supplementary material rather than tournament-grade assets.
The design of the card remains true to the original 1993 aesthetic, featuring the iconic illustration by Amy Weber. Weber, one of the original artists commissioned for the base set, utilized a surreal and ethereal style to represent the disruptive, reset-oriented nature of the spell. While the card itself is a centerpiece of the 'Power Nine'—the most powerful artifacts and spells in the game's history—this specific iteration has transitioned from a utility item into a specialized collector's piece valued for its historical ties to the game's nascent period.
