Where it came from
Tishana's Wayfinder was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ixalan. The set drew heavy inspiration from Mesoamerican mythology and the Age of Discovery, centering on the plane of Ixalan, a world defined by its lush jungles and ancient, hidden civilizations. The card represents the Merfolk faction of the plane, serving as a thematic mechanic to reflect their deep connection to the land and their role as guardians of the continent's secrets.
The card was illustrated by Dimitar Marinski, who utilized a vivid color palette to emphasize the mystical and oceanic themes central to the Ixalan Merfolk. His design sought to capture the fluidity and natural grace of the creature as it navigates the dense, uncharted wilderness. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece in limited formats, valued by players for its ability to smooth out resource draws, aligning perfectly with the set's exploration-focused gameplay design.
