Where it came from
Tishana's Tidebinder was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. As a 'promo' variant, this card was distributed through specialized channels such as Friday Night Magic events and store-level prize support, designed to highlight the high-fantasy subterranean aesthetic of the set. The art, rendered by illustrator Bryan Sola, depicts the Merfolk Shaman Tishana in a moment of crystalline manipulation, capturing the essence of the Ixalan plane’s blend of prehistoric nature and magical mysticism.
The design of the card reflects a strategic shift in power, as the Tidebinder was intended to serve as a powerful 'hush' effect in competitive formats like Modern and Commander. Its mechanical identity revolves around silencing permanent abilities, an effect that resonated strongly with players looking for interactive, high-stakes gameplay. Upon release, the card received significant attention from the community for its versatile utility, quickly establishing itself as a staple inclusion in blue-aligned decks.
