Where it came from
Tocasia's Welcome was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which explores the foundational conflict between Urza and Mishra. The card depicts Tocasia, a pivotal mentor figure to the brothers who taught them the foundations of archaeology and artifice. Her inclusion serves as a narrative anchor for the set, grounding the high-fantasy warfare in the academic and inquisitive roots of the characters' upbringing.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a soft, ethereal art style to capture Tocasia’s role as an educator and explorer. The design emphasizes her contribution to the lore by mechanically rewarding players for fielding low-power creatures, reflecting her philosophy of nurturing growth and discovery. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in Commander formats, where it quickly became a staple for deck archetypes that focus on small creature swarms.
