Where it came from
Tocasia's Welcome was released as part of the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War. The card depicts Tocasia, a central historical figure in the lore of the setting who served as a mentor to the brothers Urza and Mishra. This specific printing is a promotional variant, distributed through various organized play channels to highlight the character's significance in the game's expansive narrative history.
The card was illustrated by artist Anna Christenson, who designed the piece to reflect the character's intellectual and inquisitive nature. The visual direction focuses on her role as an archaeologist and inventor, utilizing soft lighting and scholarly motifs that align with the aesthetic established for the set. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its utility in card-draw-focused decks and its thematic connection to one of the most pivotal eras in the game's timeline.
