Where it came from
Torens, Fist of the Angels was originally released as part of the Innistrad: Crimson Vow expansion in late 2021 before appearing in the 2022 curated set Innistrad: Double Feature. The character represents the human leader of the Dawnhart Coven, a group dedicated to restoring balance to the gothic horror world of Innistrad by channeling the power of nature and light against encroaching supernatural threats. Mechanically, the card was designed to function as a resilient engine for token-based strategies, reflecting the character's role as a unifying martial commander.
The Double Feature printing utilizes a distinct monochrome aesthetic, intentionally stripping the card of its traditional color palette to create a high-contrast, cinematic appearance reminiscent of classic black-and-white horror films. This design choice was intended to pay homage to the stylistic roots of the horror genre, differentiating it from the standard card frames. It was received by players as a specialized collector's variant, prized for its stark visual departure from the vibrant, saturated art typical of the broader Magic: The Gathering card catalog.
