Where it came from
Tormenting Voice first appeared in the Khans of Tarkir expansion in 2014, designed as a versatile red card advantage spell that allowed players to discard a card as an additional cost to draw two cards. The card represents a core mechanic for the color red in Magic: The Gathering, emphasizing impulsive discovery and the discarding of resources to fuel future plays. Its recurring presence in core sets and reprint releases reflects its status as a reliable utility staple for various formats.
The Iconic Masters version, released in 2017, features the original illustrative work by Magali Villeneuve. Known for her emotive and detailed fantasy portraiture, Villeneuve depicted a figure caught in a moment of intense, mystical anguish, perfectly capturing the mechanical flavor of burning away one's thoughts to gain new knowledge. The set itself was designed to celebrate the history of the game by featuring iconic and highly playable cards with updated frames, ensuring that this specific printing remains a favorite among those who value cohesive, thematic art.
