Tourach, Dread Cantor

Tourach, Dread Cantor was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically for established Magic: The Gathering formats rather than standard sets. The character of Tourach is a legendary figure in the game's lore, long established as the founder of the Order of the Ebon Hand. The card was created to provide a powerful, modern iteration of a historical antagonist, serving as a nostalgic centerpiece for players who track the deep narrative history of the Dominaria setting.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work often features an atmospheric and ethereal quality. Hamm was tasked with depicting a figure of immense dark power, opting for a design that emphasizes the character's terrifying influence and connection to shadow-based magic. Upon release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility in black-aligned decks, particularly for its ability to disrupt opponents while functioning as a recurring, aggressive threat.
