Where it came from
Tourach, Dread Cantor was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card serves as a canonical representation of a legendary figure from the game's early lore, specifically the villainous follower of the dark god Yawgmoth. Wizards of the Coast designed the card to modernize older, iconic character concepts for current competitive formats, blending deep historical references with contemporary card mechanics.
The artwork was illustrated by Ryan Yee, who sought to capture the character's formidable and oppressive presence as a master of black mana. The visual design emphasizes the character's status as a 'dread cantor' through dark, liturgical-inspired iconography and a menacing posture. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the community as a significant inclusion for competitive black-aligned decks, particularly in the Legacy and Modern formats, due to its efficient discard-based mechanics.
