Where it came from
Tourach, Dread Cantor was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, designed specifically to bring a legendary figure from Magic: The Gathering's earliest lore into a playable card format. The character of Tourach is a foundational villain in the game's mythos, originating from the Dominaria setting where he was a notorious priest and tyrant. This specific version, a promotional showcase card, reflects the set's goal of merging iconic, nostalgic characters with modern power levels and aesthetic sensibilities.
The art for this showcase edition was crafted by long-time Magic contributor Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a distinct, sketch-inspired style that defines the Modern Horizons 2 special treatments. By focusing on a minimalist, high-contrast aesthetic, the design team aimed to evoke a sense of ancient, dark history befitting the character's status as a cult leader. The card was well-received by players for both its competitive viability in various formats and its evocative, thematic tribute to the game's deep narrative roots.
