Where it came from
The Training Drone was released in 2011 as part of the Mirrodin Besieged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the metallic plane of Mirrodin, the card reflects the conflict between the native inhabitants and the invading Phyrexian forces. Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the set's focus on artifacts, serving as a support creature that assists in equipping other artifacts, fitting into the industrial and technological aesthetic of the world.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Igor Kieryluk, who captured the drone as a functional, utilitarian machine hovering in a desolate, industrial landscape. The design emphasizes a blend of organic and metallic traits, consistent with the set's darker, biomechanical visual theme. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for limited-format play, valued by players for its ability to reduce costs for equipment-heavy decks.
