Provenance

Where it came from

The Training Drone was released in 2011 as part of the Mirrodin Besieged expansion, the second set in the Scars of Mirrodin block. The set centered on the narrative conflict between the native inhabitants of the plane of Mirrodin and the encroaching corruption of the Phyrexians, a metallic, biomechanical hive-mind. This common artifact creature was designed to interact with equipment cards, reflecting the set's thematic emphasis on the repurposing of metal and mechanical augmentation within a war-torn setting.

The card was illustrated by Matt Cavotta, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Cavotta’s design focused on the utilitarian and somewhat unsettling aesthetic of Mirrodin's metallic landscape, creating a visual representation of a drone meant for combat practice. Like many commons of the era, the card was intended to provide functional support for Limited play environments, bridging the gap between artifact synergy and creature-based combat strategies.
