Where it came from
Turf War was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis dominated by five warring crime families. The card mechanically captures the flavor of territorial disputes between these factions, utilizing a voting mechanic that reflects the shifting alliances and political maneuvering central to the expansion's narrative design.
The card features artwork by illustrator Jason Felix, who adopted the set's signature 'noir-fantasy' aesthetic to depict the brutal, stylized combat occurring on the streets of the city. Upon release, it was received as a functional tool for multiplayer Commander games, praised for its ability to encourage player interaction and negotiation, which aligns with the social nature of the format and the thematic tension of the New Capenna setting.
