Turf Wound

Turf Wound was released in the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in October 2000. The set was designed around the theme of a planar invasion by the mechanical Phyrexian empire, pitting the forces of Dominaria against a unified, multi-colored mechanical threat. Mechanically, the card reflects the set's focus on gold, multi-colored spells and land-based synergies, acting as a tactical tool to punish opponents for expanding their mana base.

The artwork was commissioned by Thomas Gianni, a prolific illustrator known for his classic, painterly style that helped define the visual identity of the game during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Gianni's depiction of the spell emphasizes a visceral, grounded reaction to the encroaching threat of the Phyrexians.
