Underground Sea

Underground Sea was originally released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, one of the ten iconic dual lands that allow players to tap for two different colors of mana. It was designed during the inception of Magic: The Gathering by Richard Garfield, intended to provide a powerful engine for multi-color deck building. The artwork for the original iteration was created by Rob Alexander, who utilized a distinct, moody aesthetic to represent the treacherous intersection of subterranean waters and dark landscapes, establishing a visual identity that has persisted as a benchmark for the game's early art direction.

The 2016 Legacy Championship version is a premium promotional printing issued as a trophy card for participants and winners of the Legacy Championship event. These cards were distributed within a highly exclusive context to celebrate the competitive Legacy format, which relies heavily on the power of the original dual lands. As part of a specialized tournament kit, this printing is distinguished by its unique set symbol and commemorative numbering, making it a highly sought-after artifact for collectors who value both the functional power of the card in play and its status as a tangible piece of competitive gaming history.
