Where it came from
Underground Sea was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card belongs to the cycle of 'dual lands' which allow players to tap for two different colors of mana. This cycle was fundamental to the early game's economy, providing a significant mechanical advantage by stabilizing multi-colored decks.
The artwork for the original printing was created by Rob Alexander, who contributed several of the foundational landscapes for the game. His approach focused on a moody, atmospheric aesthetic intended to evoke the mysterious and dangerous terrain of the game's setting. At the time of release, the card was received as a highly desirable 'rare' piece, establishing a precedent for land cards to serve as essential, high-value components of competitive deck building.
