Underground Sea

Underground Sea was released in 1993 as part of the Unlimited Edition, the second printing of the original Magic: The Gathering base set. Like its predecessor, Alpha and Beta, this card belongs to the 'Dual Land' cycle, a group of ten lands designed to produce two different colors of mana. These were created to provide players with more flexible deck-building options, though their immense power—allowing for near-perfect mana consistency—quickly established them as staples of the game's competitive landscape.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific early contributors to the game’s aesthetic. His design for the land reflects the moody, high-fantasy tone prevalent in the early nineties, utilizing a stark, cavernous composition to convey the duality of its nature. Because Unlimited was intended to address the extreme scarcity of the initial print run, this version remains a significant piece of the game's early history, marking a transitional moment where Magic moved from a niche project into a globally recognized hobby.
