Where it came from
Unholy Annex // Ritual Chamber is a double-faced card released in the 2024 Magic: The Gathering set Duskmourn: House of Horror. The set draws heavy inspiration from late-20th-century horror cinema, placing players within a sentient, infinite mansion. This specific card represents the parasitic and transformative nature of the house, illustrating the transition from a haunting presence to a tangible ritual site.
The card was illustrated by artist Dominik Mayer, known for a signature style that utilizes sharp, geometric shapes and an evocative, gothic color palette. Mayer’s work on the set focuses on the uncanny architecture of the house, intending to unsettle the viewer by blending structural integrity with demonic ornamentation. Upon its release, the card received attention for its efficiency in the game's enchantment-focused strategies, fitting seamlessly into the horror-themed aesthetic Wizards of the Coast curated for this block.
