Where it came from
Unleash the Inferno was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and organized crime tropes, centering on a metropolis ruled by five distinct demon-led families. This specific card represents the destructive, aggressive nature of the Cabaretti and Riveteers factions, reflecting the set's mechanical focus on multi-color synergies and board interaction.
The card was illustrated by artist Billy Christian, whose work frequently appears in modern Magic sets. The design aims to capture the chaotic energy of a magical explosion, utilizing vibrant colors and dramatic lighting to convey both impact and narrative power. Upon its release, it was received as a solid utility card in Limited formats, valued for its ability to simultaneously remove a creature and destroy an enchantment or artifact, effectively blending versatility with the set's thematic preoccupation with power and corruption.
