Where it came from
Unleash the Inferno is a rare instant spell featured in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Streets of New Capenna. The set is themed around a stylized, art deco metropolis controlled by five competing demon-run crime families. This particular card was designed to capture the aggressive, high-stakes aesthetic of the plane, serving as a versatile removal tool that rewards players for interacting with their opponent's board state while maintaining the cinematic flair of a classic film noir action sequence.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Prima utilized a vibrant color palette and dramatic lighting to reflect the explosive, urban-fantasy nature of the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional and flavorful inclusion for Red-White-Black (Jund) decks, praised for its efficiency in handling both creatures and permanents while reinforcing the chaotic, incendiary reputation of the Riveteers family in the game's lore.
