Where it came from
Unleash the Inferno was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna set in 2022, a Magic: The Gathering expansion inspired by the aesthetics of 1920s Art Deco and urban organized crime. The card reflects the set's central theme of factional warfare between five distinct crime syndicates, designed to embody the explosive, destructive magic associated with the Maestros or Riveteers families within the fictional cityscape of New Capenna.
The illustrative work was commissioned to emphasize the high-contrast, stylized visual language consistent with the set's noir-inspired tone. By featuring a dramatic depiction of pyromantic energy, the artwork serves to reinforce the card's function as a versatile removal spell, which saw moderate play in both competitive and casual formats due to its efficiency at managing both creatures and enchantments simultaneously.
