Where it came from
Unleash the Inferno, a red and white sorcery card, was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set drew heavily from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and noir-inspired organized crime themes, reflecting the architectural and social landscape of the fictional city of New Capenna. The promotional version, bearing the collector number 229s, specifically highlights the Gilded Age influence of the setting through unique border treatments.
The artwork for this card was commissioned from illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's signature stylized, high-contrast imagery to convey the chaotic nature of the spell. The design was intended to balance the aggressive, pyrotechnic flavor of the card's mechanics—dealing damage and potentially destroying artifacts or enchantments—with the refined, opulent visual language characterizing the plane's power brokers. It was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion and utility in limited and constructed formats.
