Where it came from
Urza's Saga was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'saga' enchantment, the card represents a mechanical homage to the history of the Urza block from 1998, depicting the titular character's workshop. The design was crafted by Wizards of the Coast to function as a land that transforms through lore counters, reflecting the progression of the character’s legendary artifacts.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who was tasked with capturing the immense scale and ancient technology of Urza's laboratory. It was received with significant critical acclaim within the community for its unique land-enchantment hybrid ruleset, which allowed it to become a staple in competitive formats like Modern and Legacy due to its versatility in searching for powerful, low-cost artifacts.
