Where it came from
Vannifar, Evolved Enigma was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Murders at Karlov Manor. The card features Prime Speaker Vannifar, a character central to the Simic Combine on the plane of Ravnica, reimagined within the set's murder mystery-themed narrative. This version of the character was designed to emphasize the set's focus on face-down cards and hidden information, mechanics that align with the Ravnican aesthetic of biological transformation and clandestine research.
The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who depicted Vannifar in a style consistent with the dark, atmospheric tone of the set. The design reflects a shift from her original Ravnica Allegiance appearance, incorporating elements of investigation and intrigue while maintaining the character’s mechanical identity as a manipulator of creatures. The card was generally well-received by players for its complex interaction with the manifest mechanic, offering a distinct playstyle that rewards tactical concealment.
