Where it came from
Vannifar, Evolved Enigma was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Murders at Karlov Manor. The card depicts Prime Speaker Vannifar, a recurring character within the Simic Combine of the Ravnica plane, reimagined to fit the set's top-down murder mystery theme. This iteration reflects her transformation and experimentation during the narrative arc of the expansion.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the character's signature biomechanical aesthetic amidst the gloomy, atmospheric setting of the Karlov Manor investigation. The design focuses on the character's mechanical ability to manipulate the board state, consistent with the Simic faction's emphasis on evolution and resource management. It received attention from players for its utility in Commander formats, where its unique ability to manifest cards face-down provides tactical flexibility.
