Where it came from
Veil of Summer was released in 2019 as part of the Core Set 2020 for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a green instant, the card was intended to provide green-aligned decks with a powerful defensive tool against blue and black interaction, specifically allowing players to protect their spells and permanents from being countered or targeted by those colors. It emerged during a period where Wizards of the Coast was actively experimenting with high-impact utility cards in core sets to shift competitive formats.
The card features artwork by illustrator Jason Rainville, who utilized a lush, ethereal visual style to convey the card's protective nature. Upon its release, Veil of Summer was recognized as exceptionally efficient, eventually becoming a staple in multiple competitive formats including Modern, Legacy, and Pioneer. Its low mana cost and breadth of utility led to significant discussion within the community regarding the balance of power in green spells, eventually necessitating restrictions or bans in certain competitive environments.
