Where it came from
Virtue of Loyalty, an enchantment card from the Wilds of Eldraine set released in 2023, represents a modern iteration of the classic enchantment cycle design. As a returning visit to the plane of Eldraine, Wizards of the Coast sought to blend high-fantasy fairy tale aesthetics with the mechanical complexity required for competitive play. The card features art by Magali Villeneuve, who was tasked with capturing the chivalric and regal themes inherent to the Ardenvale region, emphasizing themes of honor and structure through her signature painterly style.
The card was designed as part of a cycle of enchantments that function as both spells and persistent board effects, reflecting a trend toward increasing card utility in Magic: The Gathering. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its synergy with token-based strategies and its ability to provide incremental advantage in longer matches. Its reception solidified its place as a staple in the Standard and Commander formats, praised for both its strategic flexibility and the evocative nature of its thematic implementation.
