Where it came from
Vivien on the Hunt was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Streets of New Capenna. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco and noir aesthetics, focusing on a city controlled by powerful criminal syndicates. This card represents a pivotal moment in the narrative, depicting the Planeswalker Vivien Reid as she navigates the dangerous urban landscape to oppose the influence of the Phyrexians.
The card illustration was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her dramatic lighting and character-focused compositions. The design leans into the set's high-contrast, stylized aesthetic, balancing the character's traditional wilderness-themed attire with the sophisticated, industrial backdrop of the New Capenna cityscape. Upon its arrival, the card was widely discussed by players for its unique abilities that facilitate specific deck-building strategies, solidifying its place as a recognizable piece of modern card design.
