Where it came from
Released in November 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Crimson Vow expansion for Magic: The Gathering, this card represents the narrative culmination of the set’s central plotline: the marriage of Olivia Voldaren and Edgar Markov. The set is deeply rooted in Gothic horror tropes, and this card serves as a thematic centerpiece that depicts the union of the plane’s most powerful vampire families, designed to translate the pageantry of a vampiric wedding into mechanical gameplay through its multi-stage enchantment effects.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Magali Villeneuve, whose aesthetic style is known for intricate detail and dramatic lighting. Villeneuve aimed to capture a sense of macabre opulence, balancing the romantic iconography of a traditional wedding with the sinister, blood-soaked atmosphere of Innistrad. Upon release, the card was widely praised by players for its efficiency and flavor, quickly becoming a staple in competitive formats that utilize white-aligned enchantment synergies.
