Where it came from
Winnowing was released as part of the Lorwyn set in 2007, a pivotal expansion in Magic: The Gathering that introduced the tribal-themed plane of Lorwyn. This set marked a departure from the previous gothic themes of Ravnica and Time Spiral, shifting the aesthetic toward a whimsical, folklore-inspired world of perpetual autumn and light. The card itself reflects the set's focus on creature-type interactions and the careful balance of gameplay mechanics inherent to the Lorwyn design philosophy.
The card was illustrated by Thomas M. Baxa, whose dark, detailed style often contrasts with the lighter motifs of high fantasy. His artistic approach for the Lorwyn block aimed to emphasize the more sinister aspects of the plane's creatures, specifically the changelings and spirits that occupied the setting. Upon its release, Winnowing was received as a functional tool for white-aligned decks, recognized primarily for its mechanical utility in managing battlefield states rather than as a centerpiece for competitive play.
