Where it came from
Winnowing was released as part of the Lorwyn set in 2007, a pivotal expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the Lorwyn block introduced a pastoral, folklore-inspired aesthetic characterized by whimsical yet eerie creature designs. The set was designed to shift the game’s tone toward a lighter, story-focused mythos, centered on the cyclical nature of the world’s suns and the whimsical tribes inhabiting its forests.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and painterly style within the fantasy genre. In this piece, Moeller emphasizes the ethereal nature of the Lorwyn plane, using soft lighting to reflect the card's function of removal within the game’s mechanics. Upon its release, the set was praised for its cohesive world-building and distinct art direction, which helped establish the visual identity of the game for the late 2000s.
