Where it came from
Winnowing was released as part of the Lorwyn Eclipsed Promos, a selection of cards issued during the late 2007 release window for the Magic: The Gathering Lorwyn expansion. This specific promotional run was designed to showcase the set's aesthetic transition toward the darker, more mythic themes that would eventually define the Shadowmoor block, serving as a preview for the changing nature of the game world.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and atmospheric contributions to the game during the mid-2000s. Moeller utilized a distinctively painterly style to capture the card's theme of selection and judgment, grounding the abstract magical effect in a visceral, tactile environment that resonated with the high-fantasy narrative of the Lorwyn plane.
