Where it came from
Wishcoin Crab was introduced in the Core Set 2021 for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2020. As part of the core set, it was designed to serve as a functional common-rarity creature within the Limited play environment. The design team sought to provide blue-aligned decks with a reliable defensive body that synergized with the set's graveyard-filling themes, reflecting the oceanic, mysterious flavor of the color blue.
The card's illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a vivid, aquatic aesthetic to depict the creature. The design focuses on the crab’s namesake 'wishcoin'—a glowing, currency-like protrusion—to emphasize its role in the set’s mechanics. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard utility piece, appreciated by players for its solid stat line and its thematic consistency within the nautical-leaning card pool of the era.
