Where it came from
Wishful Merfolk was originally printed in the 1997 set Portal, a beginner-friendly expansion designed to introduce new players to the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. By utilizing simplified rules and distinct visual signifiers, the set sought to lower the barrier to entry for the rapidly growing trading card game, with this specific creature serving as a standard blue utility card that featured the classic, fantastical imagery associated with the Merfolk creature type during the late nineties.
The inclusion of this card in The List—a curated archive of reprints occasionally found in modern-day Magic booster packs—reflects its status as a piece of the game's history. The illustration, created by artist Donato Giancola, adheres to the established aesthetic of the time, emphasizing a somewhat melancholic and atmospheric portrayal of the Merfolk that balanced the set's approachable design philosophy with the depth of the game's evolving lore.
