Where it came from
Wishful Merfolk was released in 2020 as part of the Jumpstart set, a unique product designed to facilitate quick, randomized gameplay by combining two distinct themed packs into a ready-to-play deck. The card is a reprint from the original Visions set, fitting into the 'Under the Sea' themed deck within Jumpstart, which highlights the classic synergy-heavy playstyle associated with Merfolk creatures in Magic: The Gathering.
The card features artwork by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator known for his long-standing contributions to the game's aesthetic. Walker's design for this creature emphasizes the traditional aquatic fantasy motif, balancing the functional requirements of a basic utility creature with the distinct visual style that defined much of the game's late-nineties output. It serves as a straightforward example of the game's creature-based mechanics, appreciated for its simplicity and thematic cohesion.
