Where it came from
Abian, Luvion Usurper was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set of experimental cards introduced at MagicCon events. These cards were designed to explore unconventional mechanics and design spaces that did not fit into standard set releases, often serving as a lighthearted look into the R&D process at Wizards of the Coast.
The card features an illustration by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned artist in the Magic: The Gathering community. The design reflects the whimsical and chaotic nature of the Playtest series, with a silver-bordered aesthetic meant to evoke the feel of early prototype playtesting where mechanics were frequently revised or pushed to extremes for the sake of gathering player feedback.
