Writhing Necromass // Writhing Necromass

Writhing Necromass is a component of the Dominaria United Art Series, a collection of cards featuring the high-fidelity artwork of the main set's cards without the standard frame elements. These items were released as promotional inserts in collector boosters, designed to celebrate the atmospheric world-building of Magic: The Gathering. The set revisits the iconic plane of Dominaria, leaning into the game's long-standing aesthetic of dark fantasy and high-magic conflict.

The art featured on this card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often defines the visceral, decaying aesthetic of necromantic themes in the game. In this specific illustration, the intent was to capture the grotesque assembly of body parts that characterizes a necromass, utilizing a muted, eerie palette that reflects the threat of the Phyrexians invading the plane. The card was well-received by fans of the game's lore, who valued the larger canvas provided for the illustration as a way to appreciate the fine details often obscured by the game's text boxes.
