Where it came from
Zaffai, Thunder Conductor was released in 2021 as part of the Prismari Performance deck for the Commander 2021 set. This release focused on the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, themed around an elite academy for spellcasters. Zaffai was designed as the face card for this deck, embodying the Red-Blue color identity that focuses on powerful instant and sorcery spells and the synergy between expressive magic and destructive output.
The card’s art was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the character as a grand conductor orchestrating magical energy. The design intent was to provide a high-mana commander that rewards players for casting expensive spells by generating elemental tokens and burn damage. Within the community, the card was well received for providing a clear, thematic direction for players interested in a 'big spell' playstyle, standing out as a central piece of the set’s mechanical identity.
