Where it came from
Zaffai, Thunder Conductor was introduced in the 2021 Commander set, specifically as the face commander for the Prismari Performance deck. The card was designed to highlight the Izzet color identity, focusing on the synergy between casting high-mana spells and generating elemental tokens. This iteration of the character fits into the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, which emphasizes the magical study of instants and sorceries.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character portraits and dynamic fantasy scenes. Villeneuve aimed to convey Zaffai’s role as a conductor of arcane energy, using swirling elemental forces to reflect his powerful, spell-slinging nature. The design was received as a flavorful addition to the set, effectively capturing the academic yet chaotic spirit of the Prismari college.
