Where it came from
Zask, Skittering Swarmlord was released in late 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the 'Insect' tribal archetype, functioning as a unique commander that allows players to play lands and cast insect creatures from their graveyard. This set was designed to be a self-contained, highly replayable draft experience, with this specific card anchoring the 'Insects' deck theme.
The artwork for Zask was provided by illustrator Simon Dominic, who created a vivid, multi-limbed creature that leans into the set's aesthetic of mutated, swarming entities. Within the community, the card is recognized for its technical utility in graveyard-based strategies. It was received as a flavorful addition to the game's creature roster, fitting well into the niche of green-black insect tribal decks that prioritize board recovery and resource recursion.
