Where it came from
The Zombie Employee token was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set, the fourth in the 'Un-set' series, leaned heavily into a retro-futuristic carnival aesthetic, blending science fiction tropes with the game's traditional dark fantasy elements. The tokens were designed to add flavor to gameplay interactions involving specific creature-creating mechanics unique to the set's humorous, silver-bordered-adjacent environment.
The art was created by illustrator Caio Monteiro, who utilized a distinct, tongue-in-cheek visual language to characterize the undead worker. The design highlights the mundane horror of corporate labor, depicting a shambling zombie still adorned in a vest and tie, clutching a briefcase. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion with the set's satirical take on high-concept space station bureaucracy.
