Goethe's Hermann und Dorothea: with introduction and notes

Hermann und Dorothea was originally published by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1797, serving as his contribution to the tradition of the German idyllic epic. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolutionary Wars, the narrative reflects Goethe's effort to reconcile the domestic stability of the German bourgeoisie with the political upheaval occurring across the Rhine. The work is composed in dactylic hexameter, a form he deliberately chose to emulate the classical structures of Homer while addressing contemporary social anxieties.

This specific edition, cataloged through the University of Michigan, represents the long-standing academic effort to translate and interpret Goethe's work for English-speaking students during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These editions typically featured scholarly introductions and extensive notes to navigate the linguistic nuances of the original German. The design of such volumes from this era prioritized durability and instructional clarity, intended primarily for university classrooms and private libraries where Goethe's status as a foundational figure in Western literature was firmly established.
