Goethes sämmtliche Werke: vollständige Ausgabe in zehn Bänden

This ten-volume set of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete works was produced during the 19th century, a period when the German publishing industry sought to standardize and preserve the nation's literary canon. These editions were intended to provide a comprehensive and accessible library of Goethe’s vast output, spanning his dramas, poetry, and prose, for the educated middle-class reader who valued both intellectual depth and the aesthetic presentation of their home libraries.

The editorial and design philosophy behind these complete editions often emphasized a clear, readable typography paired with a formal, often cloth-bound or leather-backed presentation that mirrored the gravity of Goethe's stature in world literature. Such editions were received as essential fixtures of the German-speaking intellectual sphere, serving as a cornerstone of the 'Bildungsbürgertum' culture that prized the study of classical literature as a mark of refinement and cultural literacy.
